The Way of the World
He failed.
Not for want of trying, either.
The moment they returned to the safe boat, Morgan printed the photos of the Chinese agents, grabbed paper and pencils, locked himself inside the conference room, and concentrated the entirety of his being on locating them.
And found nothing.
First he attempted remote viewing. Seated at the table, pencil and paper before him, he relaxed, breathed and emptied his mind of all conscious thought. He picked a target, examined his aura, then brought his consciousness to the targetâs location, ready to receive any sensory impressions.
Nothing.
All he saw was endless dark fog, threatening to swallow his mind.
He focused, breathed deep, concentrating his willpower and his energy in his crown and third eye chakras, trying to pierce the gloom. But the fog seemed to grow darker and deeper, leading him astray in a wilderness of shadows. Objects danced in the dark, maddeningly out of reach, too blurry and indistinct to comprehend, much less draw.
The only useful image he obtained was a silhouette of an island. Hong Kong. And that might just be his monkey mind, associating Wu with the island.
Then he tried astral projection. Seated cross-legged on the floor, shoes off, he breathed himself into a trance, melting the barriers between his consciousness and Creation, bringing the vibrations of his soul in harmony with the rest of the universe. As he stepped out of his body, he centered his mind on the Chinese agentsâ auras, and let the universe take him to them.
He rocketed out the safe boat and into the sky. He soared across the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. He saw the coastline of Japan and kept on going. When he hit the Asian mainland, the universe pulled him onwards. He glided over jungles and mountains, lakes and deserts. When he found himself over India, a sense of unease crept into his mind. Yet he emptied his heart and allowed the Universe to guide him to where he needed to go. He caressed the cast of southern Africa, described a gentle curve across the South Atlantic Ocean, cut across South America, blasted across a vast ocean blue, made a brief pit stop at the Kingdom of Hawaii, and kept on going, his body gradually and finally slowing to a halt right above the house boat.
He tried other tricks. On the astral, he zigzagged across mainland China, tuning up his extrasensory perception to maximum sensitivity, hunting for the slightest hint of the menâs presence. He tried similar tactics in Ark Pacific, the Cascadian Metropolitan Area, Texas, Missouri. Nothing. When remote viewing, he looked not at the target, but at everything else around him. He saw a patterned hardwood floor, an overcast sky, gaudy yellow wallpaper, nothing he could use to glean their current locations.
For three days and three nights, his lifeâs purpose, his sole obsession, was hunting the Chinese. He spent hours on end in a meditative state, alternating between a deep trance and surface consciousness, seeking a glimmer of a hint. He left the room only to tend to his bodily functions and needs.
